Plantation Shutter Myths Debunked

October 10, 2017

Our Bakersfield shutter team has exposed a few shutter myths before. On our previous myth-busting spree, we exposed some of the most common misunderstandings people have regarding plantation shutters in Bakersfield.

Well, the Sunburst Shutters Bakersfield team is back to correct the record on a couple more myths we’ve heard from homeowners around California. Let’s get started.

Myth #1: “Plantation Shutters Only Work In Southern Houses.”

When some homeowners hear the phrase “plantation shutters,” their minds immediately go to the image of a huge, elegant southern house surrounded by hills. Although it’s true that the shutters are named for that particular place and time, plantation shutters were seen commonly in homes much earlier and much later than the Antebellum South.

Plantation shutters probably gained that name because they were commonly found in nearly every home back then. Because of their immense popularity in the south–due to their ability to keep homes cool during hot summers, and offering great views for those huge houses–the name stuck.

However, plantation shutters offer those exact same features to any style of home. Craftsman homes can use shutters, just like Colonial homes, Cape Cod houses, and even lake houses can.

Myth: “My House Style Won’t Work With Shutters Is Too Distinct For Shutters.”

Because plantation shutters saw so much use over time, some homeowners may have gotten the impression that shutters look a little stale. We’ve heard a customer say before that their house was “too distinct” to install shutters, which was a big head-scratcher–since shutters are likely the one and only window treatment that can complement any style.

Shutters are adaptable to any type of design, from modern lounge to fun man cave. And remember, there’s a reason shutters are still chosen all these years later: they just don’t go out of style. Get a set of the newest and most fashionable blinds and they’ll likely be dated in a year or two. Shutters stay beautifully in fashion for decades, especially when you install premier Polywood plantation shutters.

Myth #3: “Shutters And Blinds Are Basically The Same Thing.”

For some reason, there’s some confusion over the difference between blinds and shutters. Perhaps it has to do with people confusing “louvers” and “slats,” or perhaps the similar basic shape causes it. Regardless, shutters and blinds really couldn’t be further apart on the window treatment spectrum. Below is a basic breakdown of the battle between shutters and blinds.

Myth #4: “All window coverings are about the same in energy efficiency.”

As the “Blinds vs. Shutters” table shows, window treatments can vary by a wide margin on how much energy efficiency they offer. The structure, material, and finish can all have a big impact in how much energy efficiency a window treatment offers.

No window treatment on your window means no energy efficiency added whatsoever. Offering just a tad more energy efficiency are your everyday off the shelf aluminum blinds. Up a little further on the spectrum are drapes and sturdy fabric window treatments. Getting into somewhat noticeable territory are the majority of wood shutters and honeycomb shades, built to offer sun-blocking protection and heat reduction. But dwarfing all of these other window treatments are Polywood plantation shutters, designed to both reflect and block sunlight and outside heat from passing into your home.
